WORLD OF BIRMANS BASIC TUTORIAL

Many people worry about having their cats in online databases. Here I hope to dispel the worries and show the benefits of having your cats in the World of Birmans database and the tools provided to help you make the best choices for you future breeding programs. Please note we never divulge any personal information about breeders/owners or the registration numbers for the cats. All the data in the database has come from either donated information or cats with names in the public domain. You are protected whilst using the database because you log in using your own personal user name and password.

After loging in to World of Birmans you should check out the:

 MAIN MENU

FIG1

The main menu This page contains a message board which is updated when we load new data and other information we want to let you know about.

MOVING AROUND THE SCREENS

 FIG 2

To go back to a previous screen at any time use the windows back arrow marked at the top of fig 2. To start a new search use CATS in the box marked the left of the screen. HOME will take you out of the database and back to the World of Birmans web site.

 SEARCHING FOR A PEDIGREE

FIG 3

To begin searching for a cat click on cats. You can begin by typing the first part of the name followed by * This will bring up a list of cats with that as the start of the name. To search for continental Suffix type the * BEFORE the name, as in *Von Assindia. Care must be taken when typing the entire name as an error will appear if the name is incorrectly spelt either on the data base or by a typing mistake.

FIG 4

This screen shows the first 20 results of the search for the search on Chosenhill* there are more pages and to view those click on the numbers marked in blue or on Next found at the bottom left of the screen. After clicking on the first cat in the list  fig 5 shows the pedigree produced.

FIG 5

Your screen may not look quite the same as this one so you need to go to the small white drop down menu boxes Just below the word pedigree and select the following from the boxes:

Include Self   4 Gens        Not highlighted      Basic Details      Compact Layout

As you get accustomed to using the database you can play with the other options. Let us have a look at just a few now.

INBREEDING SCREEN

FIG 6

To find this screen go to the third white box as marked  and select HIGHLIGHT IC% (24G) This screen show at a glance how inbred a cat is the deeper the red colouration the more inbred the cat is. You will see the % amount of inbeeding written after the cats name so Chosenhill Benji Britten is 43.04% inbred over 24 generations.  At the very bottom of this type of screen is a colourcode guide with white being zero % . Please note that were a cat has missing ancestors it will appear white. Where a cat is the foundation of the breed the word foundation appears written in Blue after the cats name. See Chosenhill Wallistock Foundation  bottom of Fig 7

Note later you will see a screen which itemises the amount of inbreeding per generation.

HIGHLIGHT % BLOOD SCREEN

FIG  7

% BLOOD shows the contribution made by each ancestor in a given pedigree. Under the normal rules of inheritance they get 50% blood from each parent 25 % from each Gr Parent and 12.5% from each Gr Gr Parent  and 6.25% from each Gr Gr Gr Parent. However sometimes a cat can contribute a highter %  as seen it this screen  Caroona Tobitoo appears in a number of generations and his contribution is therefore higher in all of those generations.

HIGHLIGHT COMMON ANCESTORS SCREEN

 FIG 8

HIGHLIGHT COMMON ANCESTORS to view this screen go to the third white box as marked and select highlight common ancestors. This will screen shows at a glance of all the repeated ancestors in the pedigree. Each common ancestor is given its own colour.

HOW TO DO A TRIAL MATING

Select the cat you want the trial mating for and select the pedigree as in figs 1-5. You will see a large box with blue text in it. see the top of fig 6 Select Trial mating. The screen will change to the one displayed in fig 9

FIG 9

The name of the cat you selected appears at the top so now type in the name of the cat you wish to mate it too.

For a trial mating you can either put in the female first or the male. Note the program does not allow you to mate two cats of the same sex.

FIG 10

The screen now changes and you need to select Display trial Pedigree the screen will change to show the pedigree  similar to one similar fig 11

 FIG 11

This is the trial pedigree and you can change the way you view it using the White boxes just below the words Trial Pedigree. The amount of inbreeding is calculated over 24% generations and is marked by an arrow to show where to find it.

The screen on view in fig 11 is the highlight common ancestors screen and shows clearly this example would not be a good mating as too many ancestors appear more than once.

Ideally the best screens to use are this one and  the Highlight % IC one.  The aim for a mating is to produce a pedigree with the paler pink colours as this shows inbreeding is being reduced.

MORE ADVANCED SEARCHES

This document contains the basic instructions for using the database. but there is a lot more information to look at if you want to search around.  You can use the pull down menus contained in the white boxes or by clicking on the blue text just below where the name appears.
